Brrrrr! You know Kansas has snow right?

By ALLISON YOUNG February 24, 2022

LINDSBORG KS- Oh hey freshman and transfers, did you know Kansas has snow? I hope someone told you that because you are in for a treat. Not really, but hope you came prepared. Oh? You only have a windbreaker and air force ones….Um yeah, you're gonna need something thicker. I got you! 101 with Allison Young sit back and listen up. I’ll help you.

My people from not cold places listen here, YOU NEED SOMETHING MORE THAN A HOODIE! I learned the hard way. Please do not go back home and buy jackets and coats unless they are fleece/wool lined. Even coats that have warm padding in the inner lining make a huge difference. You need those things to stay warm.

Some reliable designers include North Face, Carhart, L.L. Bean, and more. Please keep in mind the amount you are spending will be worth the years you are here. It is so worth it. Yes, the jackets are expensive but worth the price. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet on things that will keep you from getting hypothermia and frostbite. Listen and if you can not spend the money. Go to Goodwill in Salina. Or if you don’t have a form of transportation please go to TACOL Thrift Store here in town. Also, a great way to find winter clothing is Buy, Sell, Trade on Facebook. They will have a variety of choices for you.

Moving on from coats, let's talk about shoes. Fellas with the Versace and Coach sandals please do not wear those, even if you have fuzzy socks with them. It’s not worth losing toes for your big fashion ego. Stay warm and get over it. Some shoes and boots you should try to invest in are some Timberlands, Uggs, also “A Leader” or any type of work boot. You are going to thank me.

Going forward, moving on to hand and head-wear. Beanies are good, earmuffs, double layering would be great for you to do. Again, put the ego away, wear some heavy-duty gloves. The degrees drop below -19 some days. You want to have fingers right? Some gloves you can find are from the brands: North Face, Carhart, Patagonia. Yes, you can find some of these items on Amazon. I would also recommend buying hand warmers off of Amazon to place in your gloves for extra warmth, you’re gonna need them.

If you have any questions make sure you ask some of your professors, older teammates, or coaches about the weather here and what you should invest in clothing-wise. Or you can follow me on Instagram, @AllisonRenaeYoung if you need assistance in your clothing choices. Have fun shopping for the cold!
