Spring Sports Recap

At approximately 3:30pm every weekday, the Bethany College Track is far from empty. With 5 different athletic teams utilizing the track facilities, it is no doubt that spring is upon us. The 2022-2023 spring semester at Bethany College has been full of competition and success for numerous different spring sports. It is difficult to name a better afternoon, than being outside, competing in a sport. The baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and track teams have all been at work training and competing all winter to showcase their skills this spring.

The Baseball team at Bethany College is currently 7-21 with a 3-10 home record and 4-11 away record. The team struggled in the beginning, but after their 14-7 win at McPherson on Sunday, March 26, 2023, they look to roll into the rest of the season performing at a high level and adding more tallies to their W column. On the other diamond, the softball team has had a solid start to their season with a 16-13 record. At home, they are 4-2 and, on the road, they are 7-6. One of the best qualities of the softball team is their high energy and team cohesiveness. You cannot help but feel the excitement they feel for each other when they are playing. Up next for the lady Swedes is the Tabor Bluejays on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

Perhaps the strongest Bethany team this spring is the men’s and women’s golf teams.

On the men’s side, the team traveled to the Tabor Invitational in Hesston and took first place. They had a combined team score of 548, enough to beat Northwestern Co. Iowa (A&B team), Tabor College, and Mount Marty College. For the women’s team, one of the most notable performances so far has been freshman, Brooke Norman. Norman was named KCAC player of the week after the women’s team took first at the Tabor Invitational in Hesston on March 20 and March 21. The men’s and women’s teams hope to (Mads Hasenschwandtner)

continue their success and wrap up their 2022-2023

golf year on a high note.

The tennis teams have been off to a slow start, but hope to flip things around as they approach the halfway mark of their spring season. Both the men’s and women’s teams are currently 2-7, but have high hopes to improve their record before the season ends. Make sure to get out and support the Swedes, they have 3 more home meets before post season play!

Another strong team for the Swedes this spring is the track and field team. Track and field opened their outdoor season on March 25 at the Jinx Invitational in Winfield, Kansas. At the meet, between men and women, they recorded 21 personal bests, 10 top-3 finishes, 5 event champions, and 1 national qualifier. For the lady Swedes, Taylor Claussen, sophomore, hit the national standard on her first throw. Her mark automatically qualified her for nationals for the second year in a row and also named her KCAC female track athlete of the week. For the men, Noah Scheibe took first place in pole vault with a vault of 10’6. Alan Garcia threw 122’11 in discus to claim a first-place finish and Kort Sjogren threw 172’2 in javelin to take first. The Men’s 4x100 consisting of Khyree Marshall, Enoch Ojo, Calvin Range, and Cameron Gordon also earned a first place finish. The track team will compete next March 30-April 1 at the Friends Invitational in Wichita, Kansas.

As the school year begins to wind down, there are still plenty of athletic events for students to enjoy this spring. Be sure to get outside, enjoy the nice weather, and support the Bethany Swedes this spring!
